Buffalo, N.Y. (WGR Sports Radio 550) - With their playoff chances long gone and facing a need of a healthy quarterback for the final two games of the regular season, the Kansas City Chiefs are looking to a familiar face that has spent parts of the last three seasons with the Buffalo Bills.
As first reported by ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, the Chiefs have signed quarterback Shane Buechele off the Bills' practice squad to their active roster. This comes after backup quarterback Gardner Minshew suffered a season-ending knee injury in Kansas City's loss on Sunday to the Tennessee Titans.
Buechele's career in the NFL started with the Chiefs back in 2021, signing with Kansas City as an undrafted free agent out of Southern Methodist University (SMU). While Buechele has yet to start a game in the NFL, he spent two seasons with the Chiefs before being picked up by the Bills in 2023.
Since then, Buechele has spent parts of the last three seasons with the Bills, either on their practice squad or on Injured Reserve.
It was the week before that the Chiefs lost starting quarterback Patrick Mahomes to a torn ACL in a loss to the Los Angeles Chargers that eliminated them from playoff contention.
If Buechele is in line to start the final two games for the Chiefs, he will face the Denver Broncos on Christmas and then wrap the season against the Las Vegas Raiders.
