James Cook sits out Sunday's practice, citing 'business' as his excuse

The Bills running back wants a new contract

Pittsford, N.Y. (WGR Sports Radio 550) - Buffalo Bills running back James Cook did not practice Sunday morning at St. John Fisher University, as he told Alaina Getzenberg of ESPN.com that he sat out due to "business."

Cook is entering the final year of his rookie contract, and is scheduled to make $5.271 million in base salary. He's made it known for several months that he wants a contract extension, and wants to be paid in-line with some of the top running back deals in the NFL.

The 25-year-old not only showed up to mandatory minicamp back in June, but participated fully. There was speculation he would either hold out of training camp completely, or show up and not participate, avoiding fines for not reporting, essentially staging a "hold-in."

When the team reported to training camp on July 23, Cook was in attendance and has been participating in every practice ever since.

That changed on Sunday.

Injuries continue to pile up

While Cook sat out via his own choice, there was a growing list of players who did not participate due to injury on Sunday.

This includes wide receiver Khalil Shakir, who head coach Sean McDermott called "week-to-week" with a high ankle sprain.

The Bills will be back on the field Monday for a 9:45 a.m. practice at St. John Fisher.
