Josh Allen voted most overrated quarterback by peers in ESPN players poll

"When other players don't like me, that means I'm doing something the right way"

Buffalo, N.Y. (WGR Sports Radio 550) - The league-wide disrespect for Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen continues, with the latest chapter coming in a players poll just days before kickoff for the 2024 season.

In a poll conducted by ESPN with the help of 103 players taking part, 11 players voted Allen as the most overrated quarterback in the league. Allen's votes beat out both Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts and Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who both earned 10 votes from their peers.

One NFC West player told ESPN when voting for Allen, the reasoning for his pick was "too many turnovers."

According to ESPN Stats and Information, Allen has committed 102 turnovers since the 2018 season, which leads all quarterbacks around the league.

However, since 2018, Allen is second in the NFL only behind Patrick Mahomes with 221 total touchdowns. In addition, Allen's 22,703 passing yards ranks him sixth among all passers in that timeframe, while his 167 passing touchdowns ranks fourth amongst all quarterbacks.

Allen also finished second in MVP voting in 2020, third in MVP voting in 2022, and received the only other first-place vote for MVP last season.

Under Allen's leadership under center, the Bills have also made the playoffs in five-straight seasons, with four of those years resulting in an AFC East division title from 2020-23.

In the playoffs, Allen has been relatively sharp with a 64.6% completion percentage, 2,723 yards passing, 21 touchdowns and just four interceptions. He has also helped the Bills to appearances in four AFC Divisional Round games and an AFC Conference title game in 2020.

Only Mahomes has thrown more touchdowns (41) than Allen in the playoffs since 2018, while his passing yards is only behind Mahomes (5,135) and Tom Brady (3,174).

While appearing on "Mad Dog Sports Radio" on SiriusXM on Wednesday, host Adam Schein garnered a response from Allen on the ESPN players poll, and the Bills quarterback took it all in stride.

"I'm not mad that 11 players not on my team don't like me. That's No. 1. I actually think that's a term of endearment. When other players don't like me, that means I'm doing something the right way," said Allen. "I am mad at, however, I'm never, ever invited to participate in these anonymous surveys. So that's where I find this frustrating. I want to be a part of these surveys too, and give my input as well."

But that's not the only category Allen was voted as the top player in the NFL in.

By a nine-vote margin, Allen was voted by his peers as the biggest trash-talking quarterback in the league, beating out Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield and New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

One NFC East player told ESPN that Allen is "going to run you over and talk trash after he runs you over."

Upon learning of this moniker from his peers around the NFL, Allen took to social media to have some fun.

The 2024 season will be a big year for Allen and the Buffalo offense. A lot of attention will be directed toward the Bills quarterback and how he performs without the likes of Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis as receiving options down the field.

It is also the first full season with Allen running the offense under new offensive coordinator Joe Brady. Brady replaced Ken Dorsey after 10 games last season, and earned the full-time job as offensive play-caller this offseason.

Allen and the Bills will kick off the 2024 season on Sunday, Sept. 8 against the Arizona Cardinals at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park.
