McDermott: Bills need to respect Chiefs' success ahead of Week 11 matchup

Bills head coach Sean McDermott joined the "Extra Point Show" ahead of this weekend's massive showdown with the unbeaten Chiefs in Orchard Park

Buffalo, N.Y. (WGR Sports Radio 550) - The Buffalo Bills welcome an all too familiar foe to Highmark Stadium this Sunday in Orchard Park.

After ending the Bills’ season in the AFC Divisional Round last year, the Kansas City Chiefs are return to Western New York, looking to keep their unbeaten record in tact this weekend through the first 11 weeks of the season. The Chiefs are the only remaining unbeaten team in the NFL with a 9-0 record.

However, the Bills enter this AFC showdown with Kansas City a bit banged up on offense.

Second-year tight end Dalton Kincaid is going to be out of this contest with a knee injury sustained in last week’s win over the Indianapolis Colts.

Meanwhile, rookie wide receiver Keon Coleman will be out for a second-straight week with a wrist injury sustained a couple weeks ago against the Miami Dolphins.

As for the questionables heading into Sunday afternoon, Spencer Brown (ankle) was a limited participant on Friday at practice, while wide receiver Amari Cooper (wrist) continues to work his way back after missing the last two contests.

One positive note on the injury front has been the return of linebacker Matt Milano.

Before the start of the regular season, Milano suffered a torn bicep that not required surgery, but also landed him on Injured Reserve.

This week, the Bills opened Milano’s 21-day practice window, setting him up for a potential return within the next couple of weeks. While he won’t play Sunday against the Chiefs, Milano was able to practice in a limited role with his teammates this week.

"He did well. I'm sure he felt great to be back out there with his teammates, and getting a sweat in and all those types of things,” said Bills head coach Sean McDermott during his weekly appearance on the “Extra Point Show” on WGR. “It's been a long journey for him, and just fun to watch him out there, be back out there and enjoying himself, playing the game he loves."

The Bills and Chiefs have played each other seven times since the start of the 2020 regular season, including playoff games. Both teams have become very accustomed to how each other play in one of the better current rivalries in football.

"It’s a lot in a small window of time,” McDermott said with Sal Capaccio. “A lot of respect for them, and certainly they've won quite a few championships. We're looking forward to the opportunity this weekend, should be a good game and a good matchup."

The main way the Chiefs have controlled games and remained undefeated throughout this season is due to their ability to control the ball and the pace of the game. The Chiefs are 50% on third down conversions through 10 weeks of the 2024 season so far.

"It'll be huge, because they're No. 1 in time of possession in the NFL. That's a critical piece in order to win a game, is to make sure we can win as many of those start downs as possible,” McDermott said. “They're extremely high level in that window in particular, but also in everything else they do."

Kickoff on Sunday is slated for 4:25 p.m. EST, and you can hear all of the play-by-play action on the official voice of the Bills - WGR Sports Radio 550 - with Chris Brown, Eric Wood and Sal on the call.
