Buffalo, N.Y. (WGR 550) - The Buffalo Bills have remained relatively healthy through the first three weeks of the 2023 season, but that changes this week with the loss of a key piece of the defense.
Bills head coach Sean McDermott confirmed on Friday during his appearance on the "Extra Point Show" that safety Jordan Poyer will be out against the Miami Dolphins due to a knee injury he's dealing with as a result of this past week's win over the Washington Commanders.
Despite Buffalo's loss of Poyer in the secondary, McDermott is still confident in the group he will dress this Sunday against a very skilled Dolphins offense. He emphasized how important it will be for the defensive line to get going early with the dangers this offense presents.
"You've gotta go in there with those types of goals to sack [Tua Tagovailoa], but also with the expectation to effect him by getting your hands up, and affecting him in different ways that you can," said McDermott on WGR with Sal Capaccio and Joe DiBiase. "It's not always gonna result in a sack, because he does get the ball out extremely fast."
McDermott had high praise for the influence the new Miami offense could have on the entirety of the NFL. He feels the type of play the Dolphins bring could eventually spread throughout the rest of the league, and other teams will look to embrace that offensive system.
"What happens in the league, and probably much like businesses and companies, corporations out there, people copy other people," McDermott said. "Some of the things that coach [Mike] McDaniel did last season in his first season in Miami, you're already seeing show up through the early part of this season. Some of the new things he's added I think are unique, and I think you're gonna start to see blend into the league."
With how daunting the Miami offense is, McDermott says he is excited for the challenge the Dolphins will present. He adds it will provide a great atmosphere for Orchard Park come Sunday.
"I think the challenge they present overall as a team is really what you look forward to, just from a team stand point. It's a great challenge," McDermott said. "You look at the situation and how it adds up with the success they've had, the number of points they've put up. It sets up a great environment for Orchard Park and Western New York, and the 'Bills Mafia' to witness and be present this Sunday."
