Bills hire Chris Tabor as special teams coordinator

Tabor has a rich history as a special teams coordinator with the Browns, Bears and Panthers

Orchard Park, N.Y. (WGR Sports Radio 550) - It didn't take long for the Buffalo Bills to find their replacement for Matthew Smiley as the team's special teams coordinator.

The Bills have announced the hiring of Chris Tabor to serve as the new special teams coordinator in Buffalo. ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter was the first to report the hire on Feb. 11.

Tabor has an extensive history in the NFL as a special teams coordinator, having been in that position continuously from 2011-to-2023 with the Cleveland Browns, Chicago Bears and then finally with the Carolina Panthers.

During the 2023 season, Tabor served as the Panthers' interim head coach after they fired Frank Reich as head coach 11 games into the year. In the final six games of the season, Tabor led the Panthers to a 1-5 record.

Tabor did not coach in the NFL in 2024.

It was reported on Super Bowl Sunday that the Bills were moving on from Smiley as special teams coordinator after spending three seasons in that role. He had been with the Bills since the 2017 season, serving as the assistant special teams coordinator for five seasons.
