Back in late March, the Buffalo Sabres traded veteran center Eric Staal to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for a third and fifth round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft. Following the conclusion of the Stanley Cup Final, the Sabres ended up with the 95th overall pick in Round 3, as well as the 159th overall pick in Round 5.
With the 95th overall selection, the Buffalo Sabres selected left winger Josh Bloom from the Saginaw Spirit out of the Ontario Hockey League.
Unfortunately for Bloom, his 2020-21 season with Saginaw was lost due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced the OHL to cancel its season. In his first season with the Spirit in the 2019-20 campaign, the 6-foot-2, 183-pound winger managed to net six goals and add eight assists for 14 points in 54 games.
The 18-year-old was ranked as the 113th North American skater by NHL Central Scouting, while also being ranked as the 131st overall prospect by McKeen's Hockey.
Buffalo will next open the fourth round of the 2021 NHL Draft with the 97th overall selection.
