EAST LYME, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - One person is dead following an early-morning crash on Interstate 95 in East Lyme Monday.
Joey Gaudreau-Mitchell, 18, of Storrs was driving west on I-95 near exit 73 at about 2 a.m. when he traveled over the lane and into the median where the vehicle struck a delineator post, police said.
According to police, the vehicle was knocked back over two lanes, spinning out of control until it hit a concrete base and a guardrail end.
The impact sent the car airborne, police said. While in the air, the vehicle rolled over before colliding into a tree, police said, sending the engine compartment about 50 feet away from the car.
Gaudreau-Mitchell was pronounced dead at the scene, state police.
State police shut down the southbound lanes until late in the morning as part of the investigation.
