HARTFORD, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - Cities and towns across Connecticut are preparing to distribute their share of the one million at-home rapid COVID-19 tests that the state is delivering to its municipalities starting this Thursday.
Governor Ned Lamont is calling on nearly 100 Connecticut National Guard soldiers and airmen to assist in statewide distribution operations of the three million at-home rapid tests and six million N95 masks.
"As these at-home tests arrive in Connecticut over these next several days and weeks, the National Guard will help provide support on behalf of the state to ensure that they are distributed to each municipality and school district," Lamont said.
Many cities and towns are announcing distribution plans for their local communities. Some are planning to begin giving out supplies as soon as Thursday.
The town of West Hartford is expecting to receive 8,010 COVID-19 test kits. A portion will be distributed by West Hartford Social Services through its weekly food distribution. For residents, town officials have scheduled two drive-through locations on Friday, December 31.
The distribution sites will be open from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. (or until supplies last) at Conard High School and King Philip Middle School.
Residents will get one test kit per family per household with a maximum of four kits, local officials said.
In the town of Rocky Hill, residents will be able to get up to two kits per car or person at town hall or the fire station on Thursday and Friday this week and Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of next week.
Rocky Hill officials are expecting to get 2,610 test kits. They will be limited to residents with an immediate need, officials said, such as if a resident was exposed or experiencing symptoms.
New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker announced that the city will be getting 30,000 kits. That's a total of 60,000 at-home tests for the city.
The city plans to give a portion of its allocation to non-profit organizations for vulnerable populations, Elicker said. The general public will be able to pick up a kit at two mass distribution events.
Though the details are still in the works, Elicker said the mass distributions are being planned for Friday and Saturday.
The city of New London is planning to distribute its 3,510 tests after their expected arrival Thursday morning.
New London officials will be giving out two self-test kits for each resident at C. B. Jennings School parking lot starting at 2 p.m. Thursday until supplies last.
In Killingly, motorists can pick up tests in the town hall parking lot on Friday starting at 8 a.m. and Westport residents can get their kits at Staples High School starting at 1 p.m. on Thursday.
All of these locations are requiring proof of residency.
