REDFORD (WWJ) - The Michigan State Police Bomb Squad responded to the Redford Township Police Department, late Monday morning, after someone brought an artillery shell into the building.
Police said the Bomb Squad quickly determined that the device was inert, and there were no explosions at the location, along Beech Daly near 5 Mile Road.
Next the Bomb Squad headed over to the home of the citizen who brought it in to determine if there was anything else in the house that might be dangerous. There, police said, investigators found 29 more items -- some live and some inert.
No injuries were reported.
State Police note that people who have served in the military sometimes keep objects like explosives, artillery shells or hand grenades as souvenirs. When veterans pass away, family members may find them, throw them in the car and bring them to police.
The message law enforcement wants to get across here is simple: Don't do that.
"We're starting to lost some of our Vietnam vets -- as well as, you know, World War II, Korea -- they brought a lot of stuff back with them," MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw said. "A normal citizen that hasn't really served in the military or seen stuff like this before, they don't know if it's live or not...and, actually, we don't know if it's live or not."
So, what should you do with such objects?
"Just leave it where it is and call the police or fire department and we will come to you. It's a lot safer for all of us that way," Shaw said. "If you find something in your home that you believe is an old explosive, please do not drive it to the local police station, state police post or fire department."
