(WWJ) A Detroit police officer has been suspended for allegedly shooting rubber bullets at journalists during the protests that swept the region in the wake of George Floyd's death in Minneapolis.

An MLive photographer and two other photographers were shot with rubber bullets -- after identifying themselves as members of the media. MLive says the incident happened at about midnight May 31 near Kennedy Square.

MLive reported that photojournalist Nicole Hester was hit by as many as a dozen pellets in her face and body, leaving welts and narrowly missing an eye. She was with her fiancee, freelance photographer Seth Herald, who was working for AFP, and Matt Hatcher, who was shooting for Getty Images.

“While we are pleased that the Detroit Police Department is moving this investigation forward, I am concerned by the lack transparency and how long this is taking,” said John Hiner, vice president of content for MLive Media Group. “This was a serious attack on our employee, and on the free press. I want to see the evidence come forward, and those responsible to be held accountable.”

Journalists for Freep.com, and more, reported feeling that they were being targeted by police for tear gas. Motor City Muckraker reported that officers were out of control.

A video widely circulated showed Detroit police shoving a man to the ground.

Meanwhile, Chief James Craig said officers were hit with railroad spikes and other projectiles. After things seemed to calm down, Craig lifted curfew to let peaceful protests continue hours after they were supposed to be halted.

Police say 11 other incidents from the protests are being investigated.
