(WWJ) Michigan is considered an ultra-important swing state in the 2020 election after the usually Democratic state turned red for Donald Trump in 2016, with him beating Hillary Clinton by the slimmest of margins -- 2,279,5432 to 2,268,839.
So how does the state stack up in the month leading up to the Biden-Trump match-up?
The latest poll from the Detroit News/WDIV shows former Vice President Joe Biden's with a sizable lead of nine percentage points over Trump. It's a significant upswing as a month ago, the same poll showed Biden ahead by five.
In the numbers released yesterday, Biden led Trump 48% to 39% in the poll of 600 likely voters, the News reported, adding they were surveyed over the four days following the Sept. 29 presidential debate in Cleveland. Many polls showed that Trump's numbers suffered in the wake of his performance where he repeatedly interrupted Biden and moderator Chris Wallace.
The poll also detected significant shifts in key constituencies for Trump, which pollsters noted is especially important as mail-in voting has already begun in Michigan and is expected to break records.
“The biggest shift of all came among white senior citizens in Michigan,” said Richard Czuba, CEO of the Glengariff Group, which carried out the poll, told WDIV.
He added that "COVID-19 is the central point. It is the fulcrum point of this election."
Trump followed up on his debate performance by getting checked into Walter Reed for coronavirus and emerging last night saying he felt better than he has in 20 years and taking off his mask to walk into the White House. He was also widely criticized for driving from the hospital with Secret Service agents in the car while COVID positive.
