Pair Of Armed Robberies Reported On Wayne State Campus

DETROIT (WWJ) - The Wayne State University community is on edge after two armed robberies on campus this week.

On Wednesday, just before midnight, a 38-year-old researcher reported he was the victim of a robbery on West Hancock and 2nd Avenue. He told campus police that two armed suspects pulled up in a black sedan, approached him, took his property and then left. The victim was not injured.

Minutes later, just after midnight, a 20-year-old student told police he was walking southbound on the west side of 2nd Avenue and crossing West Hancock when a black sedan stopped. Two suspects got out of the vehicle, displayed a handgun and took his property. He was not injured.

Police believe the suspects are the same in both incidents, which remain under investigation.

It's unknown if the robberies are related to a pair of purse snatchings that happened earlier this month just blocks away, near 2nd Avenue and Prentis. In both cases, the victims say the suspect knocked them down and took their belongings.

In the meantime, the campus community is urged to pay attention to their surroundings and keep an eye out for any suspicious activity. Anyone who feels apprehensive about walking alone on campus can request a free "Safewalk" from WSU police by calling 313-577-2222.
