(WWJ) In Shelby Township, the same town where the police chief was suspended last week after Facebook posts surfaced with him calling Black Lives Matter protesters "vicious sub-humans" and saying they should be in body bags, another scandal is brewing.
In this one, Township Trustee John Vermeulen is accused of racial insensitivity.
The trustee posted on his Facebook page last week "ROTFLMAO. Talk about being 'Politically Incorrect,'" on a meme that depicted Aunt Jemima hugging a shirtless Quaker Oats mascot in bed. It was captioned, "Can't we all just get along."
For those who don't speak internet "ROTFLMAO" means "rolling on the floor, laughing my ass off."
He also "laughed" on Facebook when a friend replied, "You guys don't know what your missing Brown Sugar and Oats is pretty tasty."
He removed the posts after complaints -- including a woman who said it was triggering as a rape survivor -- but people continue to post screen grabs as comments on his other Facebook posts, accusing him of racism and saying he needs to resign.
"This shows you that even Trustee Vermeulen, he is racist, and he’s taken this matter as a joke," Rev. W.J. Rideout III told freep.com. "He's taking racism, discrimination as a joke. He's doing this at a time of civil unrest."
For his part, Vermuelen has kept Facebook posts saying Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's executive orders banning gatherings are not science based, and claiming that liberals are trying to force everyone in the country to get a mandatory coronavirus vaccine.
He also shared a post saying this: "The Chinese virus caused liberals to become tyrants and liberals saw a way to ruin our economy under the premise of “saving lives”, but their real goal was to ruin Trump. Next came the riots funded by communist groups wanting to destroy America and Trump and most Americans were silent. Next came the attack on law enforcement under the guise police are all racists. Totally NOT true and police are quitting because weak politicians are capitulating to rioters and using it for their political gain. Then comes the Supreme Court making absolutely terrible rulings on DACA and and pro- homosexual rulings. Truly America and our weak politicians are systematically ruining America and most Americans are yet silent."
