(WWJ) A Grosse Pointe Farms man, who police believe to be a serial auto thief, has been arraigned on charges of stealing a car under the guise of taking it for a test drive.

Police say Robert Gordon Steiner, 52, took off in the 2021 Ford F-150 2021 from Royal Oak Ford Dealership on Woodward near 11 Mile on February 6th after saying he was taking it for a “test drive.”

The Oakland Auto Theft Task Force eventually tracked down the stolen vehicle in Detroit while Steiner was getting inside of it. Steiner was arrested at the scene.

Steiner had been wanted in connection to stealing vehicles from multiple dealerships in metro Detroit, including in Farmington Hills and Redford Township.

He also has a “lengthy criminal history” of Auto Theft and several outstanding warrants for Theft by Deception in Maine, Illinois, Florida, and Texas, according to Royal Oak Police.

Steiner has been charged with one count of Larceny by Conversion. The felony carries up to 10 years in prison or a fine of up to $15,000 or three times the value of the property stolen. His bond is set at $60,000. He is due back in court February 26.
