DETROIT (WWJ) - A blown tire may be to blame for a head-on collision that killed a small child and injured two others in Detroit on Friday evening, officials said.
Detroit police told WWJ that the fatal crash occurred around 7:48 p.m. on Van Dyke and E. McNichols when a black Mercury vehicle traveling south crossed the center line and came into the path of a white Honda Passport.
The Mercury struck the SUV head-on.
According to police, there were the children -- between the ages of 3 and 7 -- in the Mercury. All three were hurt in he collision and taken to the hospital where one succumbed to their injuries.
Investigators are continuing to investigate the crash, but Detroit's Public Information Officer told WWJ that they believe the Mercury sustained a blown tire prior to crossing over into oncoming traffic.
