1 girl killed, 1 injured in early morning drive-by-shooting on Detroit's west side

DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit police said shots fired from outside a home on the city's west side hit two girls inside, killing one and wounding the other Friday morning.

Detroit Police Chief James White said in an update around 12:30 p.m. that the incident remains under investigation since it was reported just after midnight in the 14500 block of Freeland Street near Lyndon Street and Hubbell Avenue.

According to White, an unidentified suspect open fired outside the home which was occupied by multiple children aged 7 to 16.

Gunfire struck two girls, killing a 16-year-old.

The other victim, identified as an 11-year-old girl, was taken to the hospital where she is listed in temporary serous condition, White said.

Police officers are working on gathering evidence, speaking to neighbors and requesting video footage from residents in the area who have doorbell cameras and other home surveillance devices.

White mentioned detectives were exploring "multiple angles," including an investigation into a possible confrontation that occurred at the teen victim's school before classes let out over the holiday break.

The chief said no adults were home at the time of the shooting.

The investigation remains ongoing with additional details to be released as they become available, White said.
