MONROE COUNTY (WWJ) - Officials in Monroe County confirmed the death of a young Ohio native on Wednesday after they slipped under the water at a KOA campground and never resurfaced.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office said they were called out to the KOA Campground on Tunnicliff Road in Summerfield Township around 5:51 p.m. on June 28, on a report of someone disappearing in the campground's swimming lake.

Deputies were told the victim was an 18-year-old from Pickerington, Ohio.

As deputies were en route, campground staff and guests discovered the body of the drowning victim and pulled it from the water just after 6 p.m.

First responders immediately began life-saving measures, but the 18-year-old was pronounced dead.

An investigation into the incident remains ongoing.

According to the campground's website, the small lake on the property has no lifeguards on duty and guests are warned to swim at their own risk.

Children 17 years old and younger must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times.
