RIVER ROUGE, Mich. (WWJ) -- Thanksgiving week is upon us and the folks at the Tarence Wheeler Foundation and the River Rouge School District are doing their part in helping those in need.

The 23rd annual All Star Giveback at River Rouge High School is Tuesday, where they’ll be giving away about 2,000 turkeys and spreading positivity.

“The line will be long, but at the end of the day, we’re still gonna be positive and serve people because it could be any of us. Most of us are a phone call or an email from our lives changing. We don’t want to judge anybody,” Tarence Wheeler told WWJ’s Mike Campbell.

The annual event put on by the Tarence Wheeler Foundation starts in the back of the high school at 11 a.m. on Tuesday. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s event will be a drive-thru, though walkers will be welcomed.

Wheeler says in addition to the turkeys, everyone will also receive two canned goods, a box of macaroni and cheese, a box of Jiffy mix and a box of dressing to make a complete Thanksgiving meal.

Anyone in need of help putting a meal on the table this holiday can show up, but Wheeler is reminding the public to “pack your patience,” as they expect long lines.

Wheeler says the event is made possible by some celebrities and big companies in the area, such as former Pistons star Chauncey Billups and Stellantis -- friends he’s made over the nearly quarter century working in the community.

“Because when people trust you, they’ll give you a few dollars to help you with your cause,” he said.
