DETROIT (WWJ) -- Detroit police have given an update on two suspects believed to have been involved in a “targeted sexual assault” that left a 63-year-old woman in critical condition earlier this month.

In a press conference on Monday morning, Chief James White said one suspect has been charged with assault with intent to murder.

Elvin Shepard, 44, has been arraigned and is being held on a $250,000 bond, according to authorities.

White also said that police now have a second suspect in custody. He is currently being held on an unrelated charge, but police reportedly have evidence that ties him to the scene of the crime when it took place.

The alleged assault happened on Nov. 14 in the 4400 block of Joy Road -- between Dexter and Grand River -- on the city’s west side.

Authorities say that Shirley Bryant was found partially naked and unconscious around 10 a.m. outside of a vacant church by a passerby who heard her calling for help.

Bryant had reportedly been visiting her son on her birthday when she was attacked and left for dead.

Investigators believe that Bryant was a targeted suspected. She has been in critical condition with severe head trauma since the attack, and is said to be on life support.
