According to Genesee County Sheriff Christopher Swanson, a Burton Police officer and a Genesee County Sheriff's deputy responded to Columbine and Bristol Rd. on reports into central dispatch about a person with a gun.

When the officers spotted the suspect a foot chase ensued, Swanson said, followed by a shootout.

"There was a point there was a violent confrontation," the sheriff said. "The deputy was shot, the Burton officer was shot. Backup officers cleared the scene, and those two officers were transported in backup patrol cars to Hurley Medical Center."

The suspect, who has not been publicly identified, was pronounced dead at the scene, Swanson said.

As of 5 p.m., the deputy was listed in critical condition and the Burton officer was in fair condition.

Other details are unclear at this time, as the investigation continues with help from the MSP Crime Lab.

"Obviously this is a pretty rough day for all of us," Burton Mayor Duane Haskins said at a news conference. "As this investigation continues we'll finish it up, get to the bottom of it. It will be held with integrity; it will be held transparent with everything. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of our officers who were true heroes today, protecting our residents."

Bristol Rd. was shut down between Saginaw Rd. and Dort Hwy in Burton, due to police activity at the scene.
