DETROIT (WWJ) -- A Detroit couple is in custody after a toddler was shot at a home on the city's east side.
According to police, the 2-year-boy grabbed his mother's gun and shot himself in the leg.
Staff at St. John Hospital in Detroit called police after the boy's parents brought him in Thursday morning. A police spokesperson said the child has been treated for his wound and is "doing fine."
Investigators said the gun was not properly secured and the shooting happened after a domestic dispute involving the child's parents. Both the mother and the father were arrested.
Police Chief James White says it's time to protect the kids, and accountability is a must. The DPD provide free gun locks to Detroit residents.
Gun owners can pick up the locks at any Detroit police precinct or at police headquarters.
