(WWJ) -- Officials from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) are calling it a "once in a generation arctic storm," with waves topping 20 feet on four of the five Great Lakes.

Lake Michigan, Lake Superior, Lake Eerie and Lake Ontario saw the impressive white caps on Friday, with slightly smaller waves moving along Lake Huron.

NOAA says it's not unusual to see waves that high on one of the Great Lake, but having them on nearly all of the lakes at once is uncommon.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued Marine Warnings through Saturday morning for many areas around the lakes because of the waves and gusty winds.

Additionally, the Coast Guard is strongly advising against anyone going out on the water during this time.

Not only are boating conditions dangerous, but the severe weather could also affect the Coast Guard's response vessels and aircraft, potentially preventing them from being able to respond to emergency situations.
