22-year-old man in critical condition after drive-by shootout in Warren — police searching for suspects

Police are actively investigating a midday shooting in Warren after a man was hit in the stomach by gunfire from a vehicle on Saturday.

WARREN (WWJ) - Police are actively investigating a midday shooting in Warren after occupants in two vehicles open fired on a group of people and struck one in the stomach, authorities said.

Warren Police Commissioner William Dwyer told WWJ that the incident occurred around 12:25 p.m. as the victim was walking in the area of Ida and Schoenherr with three other people.

Dwyer told WWJ earlier that a black Kia pulled up next to the group and someone inside began shooting. In a press release issued just before 3:30 p.m., police clarified that two vehicles, a dark-colored Kia and a white Toyota, were potentially invovled.

According to the commissioner, a 22-year-old man was hit by bullets, but was able to produce a weapon and fired back at the vehicles, causing the drivers to flee the scene in opposite directions.

"It is believed that both the Kia and the Toyota had several occupants," police said. "None of the three other individuals were injured during this incident."

Police officers were able to quickly arrive on scene where they found the victim with a gunshot wound to his lower left abdomen.

The victim was taken to a local hospital by police where he is listed in critical condition.

Dwyer said the scene remains very active with detectives and evidence technicians conducting an investigation into the incident. Officers are working on gathering more information, including video surveillance.

No arrests in connection to the case have been made.

Commissioner Dwyer stated that “we are fortunate that no other citizens were injured as a result of this reckless and violent act. Our officers and investigators are collecting evidence and are actively working to identify the suspects and the suspect vehicles. We are committed to using any and all resources to locate and apprehended the suspects in this incident as violent crimes like this are not tolerated in the City of Warren. We hope to have more detail suspect information in the near future.”
