(WWJ) A 4-year-old girl's condition has been upgraded to stable condition after she accidentally shot herself, police said.
"She's on the path to recovery," police said in a tweet.
Detroit Police got a call from Children's Hospital nurse about the child, who was being treated there following the shooting, Tuesday afternoon.
Police spokesman Rudy Harper told WWJ Newsradio 950 that the shooting happened on the city's east side, although they weren't sure of exactly where for several hours.
"At this time we're canvasing the area near Chene and Jefferson," Harper said around 6 p.m. "When we were alerted we were told that there was a scene near Harris Park. However, we did not find a scene there, so right now dedicated detectives are canvassing the area."
Around 10 p.m., Detroit Police said their investigation revealed the shooting took place in a home on Chene Court (1900 block) in the area of Chene and Lafayette, not at the park as originally believed.
Police told WWJ the child found an unsecured gun and shot herself. It's not clear if any adults were with her at the time or if her parents/legal guardians will face any charges.
An investigation is ongoing.
The girl's name was not released.
