ROYAL OAK (WWJ) - A 46-year-old Holly woman has been charged with multiple felonies after leading police on an intense chase through Oakland County on Thursday, where she lost multiple tires and was fired on by an officer.

Veronica Shane McClain stands accused of flee and elude - 3rd degree, malicious destruction of police property, resisting and obstruction a police officer, reckless driving and driving without a license.

If convicted of the most serious felonies, McClain could spend up to 5 years in prison.

Royal Oak police said the trouble began near 14 Mile and Crooks just after 1 a.m. Thursday morning when officers spotted a suspicious vehicle, identified as a 2005 Chevy Tahoe, committing a traffic violation.

Police attempted to pull over the SUV, but the driver -- McClain -- took off. Officers pursued her westbound along 14 Mile, towards Coolidge Hwy., where she headed north and crossed into Troy.

McClain attempted to lose the officers along Coolidge, before turning east on Big Beaver where police set up spike strips.

"Despite the successful spike strip deployment and loss of multiple tires, the suspect vehicle continued to flee," authorities said.

The suspect continued to flee with one wheel ground down to its brakes, entering southbound I-75, then exiting to McNichols. It wasn't until McClain neared Woodward Ave. and tried to turn toward 7 Mile that she crashed into another vehicle.

As an officer approached McClain's SUV, she ignored commands and attempted to flee again, causing her vehicle to fishtail, nearly hitting the officer.

The officer responded by firing an unknown number of rounds into the vehicle. None of the occupants were struck, and the officer was unharmed.

McClain led police on a final chase that ended at 7 Mile and John R, where law enforcement quickly arrested her without further incident.

Neither McClain, nor her 24-year-old son -- who was in the vehicle during the chase -- were injured.

Further investigation by Royal Oak detectives revealed a significant criminal history of drug possession and disorderly conduct along with several active warrants for auto theft, prostitution and traffic violations -- likely the reason McClain attempted to elude police.

McClain was charged and arraigned Friday. The judge set her bond at $250,000. She is scheduled to appear in court again on December 27.
