DETROIT (WWJ) - One man was fatally injured while another escaped unharmed following a dog attack in Southwest Detroit early Tuesday afternoon, police confirmed.
The Detroit Police Department told WWJ Newsradio 950 that the 58-year-old male victim, along with another man, were trying to assist the stray dogs in a building along 5400 block of West Fort Street around 12:40 p.m. on April 4 when the animals turned on him.
Police said the man was mauled by the animals, which were described by other local news outlets as two pit bull-type dogs. Police did not specify their breed when they spoke to WWJ.
The victim was pronounced dead the scene, while the other man was uninjured in the attack, DPD added.
The dogs were removed from the street and are currently with animal control.
While stray dogs are a common sight in the city, there has been no official estimate in recent years as to just how many are out there. Back in 2014, after the Detroit Dog Rescue infamously estimated the number at 50,000, officials with the World Animal Awareness Society told WWJ a three-year scientific study found there were around 3,000 stray dogs roaming Detroit.
