7 Detroit charities to think about donating to on Giving Tuesday

DETROIT (WWJ) -- Giving Tuesday is Nov. 30 and it's touted as a "global generosity movement unleashing the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and the world."

There are a multitude of charitable organizations in Detroit that could use some generosity to help make the city a better place for all.

Below are seven Detroit charities to consider donating to on Giving Tuesday -- or, any day.

Animal Rights

Michigan Anti-Cruelty Society -- MACS is the last open admission animal shelter in the city of Detroit and citizens will never be charged for turning in an animal. The charity provides extensive sheltering, veterinary care and pet adoption services to thousands of animals.

Community Development

Eastern Market Corporation -- Their vision is to strengthen the identity of Eastern Market as the center for fresh and nutritious food in Southeast Michigan by enhancing current operations and developing business opportunities for food retailers, food distributors, restaurants and more.

United Way for Southeastern Michigan -- Their mission is to improve communities and individual lives, along with empowering every family to succeed in Southeastern Michigan by uniting around education, economic prosperity and health.

Environment

The Greening of Detroit -- Guides and inspires the reforestation of Detroit's neighborhoods, boulevards and parks through tree planting projects and educational programs. Every year, these projects range from full park restorations to streetscape renovations and street tree plantings to the creation of community and family vegetable gardens.

Human and Civil Rights

Detroit Justice Center -- This non-profit law firm works alongside communities fighting to reunite families, lifting barriers to employment and housing and strengthening communities by supporting small businesses and land trusts.

Human Services

Alternatives for Girls -- The organization strives to help homeless and high-risk girls and young women avoid violence, teen pregnancy and exploitation. They help them explore and access the support, resources and opportunities necessary to be safe, grow strong and make positive choices.

Old Newsboys' Goodfellow Fund of Detroit -- This 107-year-old charity provides holiday gift boxes, which include warm clothes, games, a dental kit and more, to children between the ages of 4-13 who live in Detroit, Highland Park, River Rouge, Harper Woods, Ecorse and Hamtramck.
