PARK TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WWJ) -- Eight people were rescued from Lake Michigan after being swept away in rough waters on Sunday.
The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office said it happened around 2:45 p.m., when they were called to the beach near the Holland Harbor Lighthouse's south pier.
Rough waters originally pulled three people out into the waters of Lake Michigan near Lakeside Road and Interlake Walk in Park Township, seven miles northwest of Holland.
While waiting for deputies to arrive, five more people tried to save the first three individuals, but started to struggle as well.
Ottawa County Sheriff's Marine Patrol was able to rescue two of the swimmers. Good Samaritans on paddleboards and Jet Skis saved the other six people.
All eight people made it out of the water safely. None of them needed medical care.
Holland police and fire departments as well as the Coast Guard helped the sheriff’s office with the rescue.
