BROWNSTOWN TWP. (WWJ) -- A Wayne County man is alive today after a fire engulfed his home -- all because of his dog, Mercy.

The Brownstown Township dog is being hailed as a hero after successfully waking up his owner, Keith Shepherd, to alert him of the ravaging flames so he could make it out in time, according to the township's fire chief.

Unfortunately, Mercy didn't make it and lost her life in the fire.

The Brownstown Township Fire Department was called to a fire early Wednesday morning on Woodruff Road west of Jefferson Avenue, but when they got there the house was already up in flames.

Shepherd was out of the home by the time the fire crew arrived.

A Gofundme was created for Shepherd to help him rebuild his home. As of 9 a.m. Friday, the page has almost reached $1,000 of its $50,000 goal.

"Mercy saved Keith's life during this devastating event and we will forever be in debt and thankful for that little girl," said the creator of the online fundraiser, Ray Faes. "She was a very special dog and proved that right up until the end."

The cause of the fire is currently being investigated.
