GAINES TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - Police called it a "grizzly" scene when they discovered 13 animals had starved to death when their owner died at home on Michigan's westside.

The woman, identified as 64-year-old Gilda Mizell, was found dead by authorities in a vehicle parked in front of her home in Gaines Township, just south of Grand Rapids back in January, as reported by WNEM 5.

She was the sole caregiver for her heard of horses and three dogs.

As police investigated, they found 12 miniature horses had died in a couple of barns on the property; one deceased dog was also found when police went through Mizell's home.

Police said they believed the woman died of natural causes — it is unknown at this time how long her death went unnoticed.

Authorities are waiting on results from the medical examiner.

Two dogs and one horse were found alive and believed to be with a local rescue group.
