(WWJ) – Earlier this month a trail camera in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula spotted what is known as a “Spirit Bear” – the first ever spotted in the state. The majestic animal is so rare it’s thought to be one-in-a-million.
The Michigan DNR says there are about 10,000 bears in the U.P. alone, so seeing a bear isn’t all that uncommon. But the spotting of the white bear has scientists fascinated.
But as WWJ’s Zach Clark learns in a new edition of The Daily J, this bear is special far beyond its coloration. He spoke with a member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, who is a professor at Oakland University. She told him white animals are sacred to many indigenous cultures, and explained just what it means.
