ANN ARBOR (WWJ) - Ann Arbor police are on the hunt of a male suspect that they say groped a woman near her apartment late Monday night before running away on foot.

Officials are warning the public as they continue to investigate the incident, which occurred around 11:50 p.m. the night of July 24.

According to police, a female victim told them she had just left her home at the Willowtree Apartment complex on the 1900 block of Plymouth Road when she noticed an unknown Black male behind her.

The woman said she was walking towards the mailboxes when the man sprinted towards her and groped her from behind. The suspect took off on foot in an unknown direction after the woman screamed.

The victim described the suspect as standing approximately 5’ 10" and was wearing a black shirt, blue jeans, with short hair.

No other details were made available as investigators continue to learn more about the incident. Authorities are turning to the public for any information that may be helpful.

Anyone that was in the area at the time of the assault who may have seen something suspicious has been asked to contact AAPD at (734) 794-6920.

The latest case comes not even a month after another sexual assault was reported at the Ford Motor Company Robotics Building off Hayward in Ann Arbor on Friday, July 7.

University of Michigan police said an unidentified male was banging on a locked exterior door to the building just before 10 p.m. and was able to gain authorized entry when a person inside allowed him in.

Once in the building, he followed a female victim into a room and sexually assaulted her, campus police stated.

Authorities were unable to provide any information on the suspect in that case, except that he is male.

Campus law enforcement said everyone on campus should remain alert and aware of their surroundings at all times and offer the following tips:

• Trust your intuition. If a particular situation makes you feel uncomfortable or unsafe, choose an alternative.

• If you see something, say something. Report suspicious behavior. Call 911

• Avoid providing building access to people you do not know, or anybody who makes you feel unsafe.

• Walk with a trusted friend or co-worker when possible

Anyone with any information about the incident has been asked to contact the U-M Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS) at (734) 763-1131 or email UM-DPSS-Tips@umich.edu
