FERNDALE (WWJ) -- A 16-year-old Ferndale High School student has been arrested after a hand-written note found in a student bathroom Tuesday morning led to a lockdown.
Ferndale High and Middle School -- which are located in the same building -- were both locked down around 9 a.m., not one day after classes at the school were forced to close over other online threats.
Students at both schools were dismissed around 11:30 a.m., about an hour after a 16-year-old boy was identified as the author of the threat.
The threat was found in the bathroom, despite a heavy police presence at the school in the wake of the threat discovered Sunday night.
Ferndale police officials say the boy will be held at Oakland County Children's Village while the case is reviewed by the prosecutor's office.
Police officials said Tuesday's threat was a "similar, but separate incident" from the prior online threats that closed the schools on Monday.
A 16-year-old girl, a student at the high school, was arrested in connection to the online threats, after allegedly threatening online to bring three loaded guns to school. The threats reportedly included a "hit list" with other students' names.
While nothing came of the threats, WWJ's Mike Campbell reports the female student now faces possible felony charges, including up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
Ferndale High School and Middle School saw an increased police presence Tuesday as students returned to class.
School officials across the Metro Detroit area say students who see or hearing anything concerning are encouraged to submit tips to a confidential line through the state’s Ok2Say app or website.
