BAY CITY (WWJ) – A man is hospitalized and in police custody after being shot by a Michigan State Police trooper in Bay County early Sunday morning.
MSP officials in Metro Detroit have been called in to assist with the investigation after the officer-involved shooting, officials announced Sunday.
A 21-year-old Bay City man is in stable condition after the shooting, which stemmed from an assault investigation, according to MSP.
It all unfolded around 12:45 a.m. Sunday when a Tri-City Post canine trooper and his dog were assisting the Bay County Sheriff’s Department with tracking the suspect, who had fled from police following a possible assault.
The trooper and his dog encountered the suspect near Marleen Drive and Murphy Street in Bay City. Officials say the suspect was hit once after an exchange of gunfire. The trooper and canine were not hit.
Authorities did not say how many shots were fired by the suspect or trooper.
MSP officials have not released any details about the alleged assault that prompted the initial investigation.
The suspect, whose name has not been released, was taken to a hospital for treatment and was said to be stable late Sunday morning.
The MSP Second District Investigative Response Team is handling the officer-involved-shooting. In accordance with department protocols, the trooper has been placed on administrative leave while the incident is investigated.
