Authorities searching for source of suspicious gasoline smell in Flat Rock

FLAT ROCK (WWJ) -- Authorities in Flat Rock are going door-to-door searching for the source of a mysterious gasoline smell.

Flat Rock Fire Chief James Katona says a resident reported an odor Monday night around 6 p.m. on the southeast side of the city, but responding firefighters found nothing.

On Tuesday morning, the Department of Public Service received a pump alarm. When they opened the pump house, the gasoline fumes were overpowering.

WWJ's Mike Campbell reports that as of Wednesday morning, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) had also joined the investigation.

Chief Katona is urging residents who smell gas in their basement or anywhere in their home to report it by calling the Flat Rock non-emergency number at 734-782-2496 Ext. 0.

Monroe County residents who live near south east Flat Rock are also urged to report any odors of gas to authorities.
