DETROIT (WWJ) -- At the end of summer 2023, Detroiters will be able to get in on the latest experiential trend -- a dog park designed as a beer garden. Or is it a beer garden designed as a dog park? Turns out, it's both!

This exciting new venue -- adorably dubbed "Barkside" -- is a combination dog park, bar and beer garden for canines and humans alike.

Located at 7960 Kercheval Ave in Detroit's West Village, the Barkside space was carefully designed for dogs and their people.

In addition to the 3,000-square-foot indoor dog park and bar, a larger outdoor area will feature 7,000 square feet of fenced-in green space with seating for over 100 guests, room for dogs to play, a covered patio, TVs and a second bar.

Menu items focus on Detroit and Michigan brands, including both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. Not to be outdone, the dogs have a "paw-fect" menu of their own -- offering specialty "dog beer," treats and birthday pupcakes.

Barkside founders, David Oh and Cody Williams describe the venue as "a social destination for dogs and their humans to relax and enjoy a beverage in the company of others."

"Our team at Barkside has a wealth of experience in the hospitality business and truly cares for canines – we’re committed to creating bonds and fostering connections in the Detroit community," Oh says.

Oh and Williams are longtime Detroiters, dog lovers and Michigan State University graduates with backgrounds in economics, finance and corporate strategy. They are thrilled to introduce Barkside in West Village and hope to eventually expand into the Metro Detroit suburbs.

"We are both innately passionate about dogs," Williams said. "Like many of us who love our dogs, we want to go out but often feel guilty leaving them at home."

After visiting other dog bars around the country, the pair recognized the need for a place like Barkside in the Motor City. Williams says that dog bars are both an exciting place for dogs to socialize and a good way for animal lovers to gather and build a community.

"Our four-legged friends offer a great icebreaker to meet people and make new friends."

Beyond day-to-day operations, the duo plan to host special events including dog yoga, adoption fairs, puppy training classes, trivia, singles mingles, breed meetups and more.

Barkside will offer day passes for the casual visitor who brings their dog, as well as monthly and annual memberships.

Experienced staff will be onsite to help monitor the pups and ensure positive interactions. Dog parents are also required to show proof of up-to-date vaccination prior to entering to ensure everyone's safety.

Anyone who wants to visit the park without a dog is more than welcome, and admission is free.

Barkside expects to welcome guests starting in late summer 2023.
