(WWJ) Leaders at Beaumont Health are out with a warning: Get vaccinated now to avoid another surge of COVID-19.
Dr. Joel Fishbain, Medical Director for Infection Prevention at Beaumont Hospital Grosse Pointe, says the overwhelming majority of new COVID-19 patients they're seeing admitted have not been vaccinated against the disease.
As of Monday morning, the health system had 64 inpatients with COVID — only three of whom were vaccinated. That means more than 95% of new COVID patients have not gotten the shot.
With the more contagious delta variant now circulating, Fishbain told WWJ's Dr. Deanna Lites he is concerned about an increase in cases in Michigan in the coming weeks.
"I think the potential exists for a huge disaster, and — what do you want to call it? Surge four, surge five... I've sort of lost count," Fishbain said.
"But if you had a large group of individuals who have not had COVID, or did not know if they've had COVID and they are susceptible, and you put them in a situation that allows the delta variant to be transmissible, you could have another explosion of cases."
Fishbain said the public should follow CDC guidance concerning masking up indoors where case loads are high.
Those who are hesitant to get the COVID-19 vaccine, or just have questions about it, are urged to speak to their doctor.
