ROYAL OAK (WWJ) - When the Beaumont Health System began looking to provide a safer environment for patients, staff and visitors, hospital administrators turned to a pointy-eared, 20-month-old German Shepherd to get the job done.
Meet Eros: the newest member to join Beaumont Royal Oak who is trained on explosive detection, obedience, aggression, building searches and doubles as a therapy dog to meet the hospital's many needs, WWJ's Deanna Lites reported.
The almost-2-year-old German Shepherd is named after the Greek God of Love, which his human partner Officer Angelo Gritsas told Lites is fitting because Eros loves everyone.
"I believed we picked each other, it wasn't me just picking him," Gritsas said about Eros. "I'm with him 24-7; our bond is very, very strong."
The dog has already been a calming presence for patients who need extra help while in the hospital, Gritsas said, recalling one incident where Eros was able to comfort a child.
"The child was focused on Eros. I let him pet him and while he was petting Eros, he allowed medical staff to do medical procedures that they needed to do," Gritsas explained.
The Beaumont Health System employs 14 other K-9 dogs across its hospitals to help provide a happier, safer and more comfortable environment.
