(WWJ) "No swimming" signs have been posted by the Michigan DNR at the popular beach on Detroit's Belle Isle.

The Detroit Health Department said Thursday that recent samplings at Belle Isle on the Detroit River have shown levels of E. coli that are above safe swimming levels.

As a result, the Michigan DNR has closed the beach to the public for the time being.

It's not yet clear if there's a chance that the beach — which is typically packed during the summer — may reopen for the weekend. Officials said it will remain closed until sample results show safe E. coli levels.

Belle Isle is one of a total of eight Michigan beaches currently closed according to EGLE, the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes & Energy.

The others, as of Thursday afternoon, are as follows:

Handsome Lake - Crossroads For Youth, in Oakland County

Wixom Lake - Wixom Waters, in Midland County

Crooked Lake - Independence Oaks County Park, in Oakland County

Lake St. Clair - St. Clair Shores Memorial Park Beach, in Macomb County

Big Seven Lake - Seven Lakes State Park, in Oakland County

Houghton Lake - Lakeview Park, in Roscommon County

Crystal Lake - Beulah Beach, in Benzie County

Storm water runoff is typically the reason for bacteria-related beach closures, although droppings left by geese and other wildlife has also been noted as a source.
