DETROIT (WWJ) – The Detroit Mounted Police Department has lost a beloved member of its force, a 14-year-old Percheron Morgan cross named Remi.

Detroit police officials announced Tuesday the horse, a 6-year veteran of the mounted unit.

“We are deeply saddened to say that we lost one of our great mounts this morning, REMI,” officials said on social media. Officials did not release a cause of death.

Remi, along with his rider, Officer Matthew Miller, were “a great team,” officials said.

“You could catch the two of them in Greektown, Mexicantown, visiting kids at schools, football games and leading parades with their assigned beat downtown,” the post said.

Remi, standing at 17 hands and weighing more than 1,800 lbs., had a stature that was “a perfect fit for controlling crowds when needed.” But his “gentle demeanor and beauty suited those that wanted to pet him and pose with him for pictures.”

"Rest in peace big boy," the post said.

The city’s mounted police has a storied history, dating back to the 1890s. Prior to Remi’s death, the unit had 10 horses.
