Birmingham police searching for thief responsible for stealing, damaging public installation

BIRMINGHAM (WWJ) -- Police are trying to figure out who is stealing and moving artwork along a walking trail in Birmingham.

The ‘City Bloom: Birmingham’ art installations were put on display last year along the Rouge River Trails during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Since March, multiple incidents involving the artwork have been reported, with one piece being stolen and others moved from their original locations.

Additionally, at least four pieces have been damaged by people trying to get them out of the ground.

Artist Laurie Tennent, who worked with the Robert Kidd Gallery and Birmingham's Public Arts Board to display the exhibit, says it doesn’t appear that someone is trying to vandalize or damage the art, just that they’re trying to take it.

Birmingham police are asking anyone with information to contact them at 248-530-1870.
