(WWJ) -- Statewide COVID-19 restrictions are set to be lifted on July 1, when Michiganders will no longer be required to wear masks in public or follow social distancing guidelines.

But if you’re a fan of Bobcat Bonnie’s, you’ll have to wait a few extra days to return to the metro Detroit restaurant chain without your mask -- and with good reason.

Owner Matthew Buskard says all five Bobcat Bonnie’s locations will be closed June 28 to July 5, as they plan to give all 225 employees some paid time off over the Fourth of July holiday, thanking and rewarding them for navigating a global pandemic in the restaurant industry.

“It’s been a super tough year for everyone and especially our staff,” Buskard said in a Facebook post.

“We are copying what some amazing friends in [Ypsilanti] started, which is giving our whole staff and company and extra week of PAID vacation,” the post said, referring to Maiz Mexican Cantina in Ypsilanti, which is also providing its employees with some time to relax.

After taking some “paid me time,” employees will return to work at all locations in Detroit, Ferndale, Ypsilanti, Wyandotte and Clinton Township, on July 6.

Buskard says they’ll be funding the paid break with money the company received from the Small Business Administration’s restaurant revitalization fund.

Fans of Bobcat Bonnie's on Facebook seemed to have nothing but praise for the move, with one user commenting "Businesses like this give me hope for the future."
