DETROIT (WWJ) -- A teenage boy is in police custody after a 3-year-old boy was shot in the head early Thursday morning, believed to be a self-inflicted gunshot.

Police say the shooting happened just before 3 a.m. Thursday at a home on Alameda Street, near 8 Mile and John R roads.

WWJ's Newsradio 950's Charlie Langton, who was on the scene, was told the boy was taken to a local hospital where he is in stable condition and expected to survive

Police officials had been searching for the child's 16-year-old brother, who had fled the scene with the gun. Detroit police took a teen, believed to be the brother, into custody around 3 p.m. Thursday.

That teen's name was not immediately released.

Officials said the teenager has a history of gun violence.

Detroit Police Chief James White said the community should "be outraged that a child had easy access to an unsecured weapon."

"The only good news is that this child will survive," White said, per a press release. "Just a few months ago I said we must do more to protect the most vulnerable in our community and prevent senseless acts of gun violence. I’m fed up and angry. Our thoughts and prayers are not enough. This is not acceptable. As a community, we must do some soul-searching and rise up together to say enough is enough.”
