DETROIT (WWJ) — Italy may the birthplace of pizza, but you don't have to travel halfway across the world to taste some of the best pizza in the world, a new ranking says — in fact, all you need to do is make your way to Metro Detroit.
Buddy's Pizza, already highly regarded among Michiganders and beyond for its Detroit-style pizza, has been officially named one of the best pizzerias in the world.
According to Big 7 Travel, a self-proclaimed "current, curated recommendation" website, they ranked the top 50 pizza places globally based on audience surveys, reader suggestions and their editorial team.
Buddy’s Pizza, a Metro Detroit staple, came in at #25 on their list, beating out pizzerias from Valletta, Malta, Caiazzo, Italy, and Brooklyn, New York.
"If you prefer your pizzas square with a crisp and chewy crust, get yourself to Buddy’s Pizza – they invented the Detroit-style pizza in 1946," the website said.
To many locals, the king of all pies is the pizzeria's signature Detroit-style pizza with its crisp, focaccia-like crust, savory pepperoni pressed into the dough and frico cheese flowing all the way to the ends of the pan.
The site of the original Buddy's location resides at 6 Mile and Conant Street, also credited with helping create the Detroit-style pizza, but you can find it now at many locations outside the city.
"Happily, there are now 16 locations to choose from across Detroit, so you’re never far out of reach from an ooey-gooey slice of heaven. Order the Detroiter, made with tomato-basil sauce and topped with parmesan, spices and pepperoni," the site added.
The latest honor comes months after Detroit was ranked as Best Pizza City in the U.S. by Anytimeestimate.com.
