SHELBY TWP. (WWJ) -- The Shelby Township Police Department is investigating a student after an alleged threat was made to a high school last week.

Officials say Shelby Township Police received a threat report from Eisenhower High School last Friday, after someone allegedly airdropped a picture of a gun to Eisenhower High School students while school was in session.

Airdrop means to send or 'drop' files over the air, using 5G or Wi-Fi, from one device to another; in this case, from a student's phone or tablet to the phones or tablets of other students nearby.

An investigation started immediately, and — with the help of the Michigan State Police Forensics Crime Lab — police said they were able to identify the phone number and the student who sent the picture.

The investigation was ongoing, police said, adding in a news release Wednesday that "charges are pending" against the student responsible.

Police added: "It is important to reiterate that the Shelby Township Police Department will investigate all types of threats to our schools immediately with the goal of holding responsible individuals accountable."

So far, details about the student under investigation, including the student's age and grade, have not been released.

This incident comes a little more than a month after a deadly mass shooting at Michigan State University, and 16 months after a deadly mass shooting at Oakland County's Oxford High School, just 20 miles from Eisenhower High.

All students in Metro Detroit and across the state are urged to report any threats of suspicious behavior. If students are uncomfortable reporting to school administrators or police directly, they can share information confidentially through the state of Michigan's OK-2-SAY "tip line" at 855-565-2729, or by texting OK2SAY.
