Couple killed in early morning Detroit house fire: "It's heart-wrenching"

DETROIT (WWJ) -- Two people have died in a house fire., early Monday morning on Detroit's east side.

Authorities said the fire broke out in the 13000 block of Maiden, near I-94 and Chalmers, just before 3:30 a.m.

The home was fully engulfed in flames when the Detroit Fire Department arrived on the scene, which Detroit Fire Chief James Harris said is a nightmare scenario for firefighters.

"It's heart-wrenching," Harris said. "It makes you think. You think about your own safety; you always think about the citizens' safety first. It's just one of our worst situations we respond to as a firefighter.

Reporting from the scene, WWJ's Charlie Langton said the victims, 65-year-old Patricia Morgan, and her boyfriend, 55-year-old Jeffrey Gladney.

Harris said the couple died from smoke nihilation.

The fire was out before 5 a.m.

The cause is still under investigation.
