DETROIT (WWJ) -- Detroit Police allege that a 37-year-old Dearborn man sexually assaulted his female passenger while driving for Uber. He then threw the woman out of the car and drove away.
On the morning of July 10, DPD responded to the reported rape in progress on Lantz Street near the I-75 Service Drive.
The suspect had fled, and the victim, a 24-year-old Roseville woman, was lying on the ground. Paramedics took her to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Officers arrested Al-Thwej on Saturday. He was arraigned Wednesday afternoon and charged with First- and Third-Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct and Unlawful Imprisonment.
Al-Thwej was given a $250,000 bond. If released, he will be required to wear a GPS tether.
The suspect is due back in court September 16 for a Probable Cause Conference. A Preliminary Examination is scheduled for September 22, before Judge Kenneth King.
In a Wednesday press release, Prosecutor Kym Worthy reminded citizens to be cautious when using rideshare services.
“There is no doubt that ride companies provide a great service, but this case is an example of a requested ride that went horribly wrong," said Worthy. "Be careful when you use these services, not every driver can or should be trusted blindly."
