Dearborn police arrest hit-and-run suspect that struck student getting off the bus

DEARBORN (WWJ) -- The search for a driver accused of hitting a teenager getting of the bus after school and fleeing the scene is over Saturday after police said they have made an arrest in the case.

Dearborn police said the suspect wanted in the hit-and-run incident on Thursday was taken into custody and his vehicle impounded, FOX 2 reported. .

According to police, the driver struck a teenager who was crossing Canterbury St. near Whittington St. in the city's Southend around 5 p.m. on December 15.

Video footage shows that the vehicle then backed up and sped away.

Investigators obtained surveillance footage that captured the car in question -- an older model blue Dodge Durango. The vehicle likely had some front-end damage resulting from the collision.

Witnesses to the hit-and-run had described the SUV's driver as an African American woman.

On Friday, the principal at Edsel Ford sent a letter to families that confirmed the victim was a student.

"There is a video of this horrible accident on social media and I feel it is important to provide additional accurate information.

"On Thursday afternoon, an Edsel Ford student was dropped off in their neighborhood. As the student walked home the student attempted to cross the street and was struck by a car. the car drove away and police are looking for the driver...

"I have personally visited with the student’s family. I share our deepest concerns for their child and I know that all of us here at Edsel Ford are praying for our fellow Thunderbird."

The teen was taken to a local hospital, treated for minor injuries and released.

“This is a terrible incident," Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin said in an earlier press release. "I am confident the Dearborn Police Department, together with the community’s assistance, will be able to locate the driver of the hit-and-run vehicle.”
