PONTIAC (WWJ) - Authorities have ruled the deaths of an Oakland County heath official and her husband as a murder-suicide after their bodies were discovered in their Pontiac home on Thursday.
While the motive surrounding the death of county health officer Dr. Calandra Green, 50, and her husband, Charles Quincy Green, 52, remains unknown, Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard said in a prepared statement taht his office was contacted when Calandra didn't show up for an appointment on May 11.
Colleagues and family members also felt something wasn't right when they were unable to reach Calandra.
“Family members went to the home and started to walk into the house,” Bouchard said via WDIV. “It didn’t look right, and they smartly backed out and called 911."
When deputies entered the home around 1: 30 p.m., Bouchard said they found the two bodies in the living room of their home in the 300 block of Alhambra St. in Pontiac.
Calandra was on the floor with her back against the couch while her husband was nearby -- both sustained fatal gunshot wounds. The Oakland County medical examiner has since ruled Calandra's death a homicide and Charles' death a suicide.
A handgun was found at the scene, Bouchard added.
“A terrible and tragic situation that we seem to see more often these days,” Bouchard said. “It’s hard to understand how someone that professes his love for another person can at some point commit such violence on them. Our prayers are with all those affected by this horrific loss.”
Oakland County Executive Dave Coulter expressed the shock and sadness at the news of Calandra's death and released the following statement:
"Our hearts are shattered at the news of the passing of our colleague and esteemed Health Officer Dr. Calandra Green, Words cannot express how devastating this news is to our Oakland County family. Calandra was a beloved member of our team and a light to all who had the privilege to know and love her."
Coulter furthered added that the North Oakland County Health Clinics and the South Oakland County Health Clinic would be closed on Friday, May 12 to allow employees time to grieve and process the "devastating" news.
The late doctor made history when she was appointed as the first woman of color to serve as Oakland County’s health officer in April 2022.
The case remains under investigation at this time.
